PARGA A gem on the shores of Epirus
Built on the top of a small steep peninsula between Valtos Beach and Parga, this castle can justifiably be considered a landmark of Parga. During the 400 years of Venetian rule, it was demolished and rebuilt several times. The pirate Barbarossa was the first to destroy the fortress. In 1567, the Venetians rebuilt it. The Ottomans attacked it in 1571, and the Venetians restored it again after the Battle of Lepanto. It remained impregnable until 1819, when the people of Parga were forced to abandon it to avoid being enslaved by the Turkish ruler Ali Pasha.
In 1913, the Greek army succeeded in liberating Parga. On May 22, 1930, the sacred relics, the ashes of the ancestors, and the flag, which the citizens had taken with them to Corfu, were brought back to Parga and are now kept in the Church of Saint Apostle.
